Equipment News | 5G+AI achieves inclusive ophthalmic intelligent medical care, Big Vision AI OCT successfully installed at the First People’s Hospital of Aksu.

Aksu, which means “clear water” in Uyghur, is irrigated by the Aksu River and Tarim River, the longest inland river in China, for thousands of years. In the Han Dynasty, it was an important post station on the ancient Silk Road, and in the Tang Dynasty, the famous monk Xuanzang also passed through here on his pilgrimage.

Today, relying on emerging technologies such as 5G and AI, it has become an eye health center that guarantees ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment services for the people in southern Xinjiang.

New Year’s Day 2022

Big Vision Medical Technology’s AI OCT BV1000 was installed at the First People’s Hospital of Aksu, and after simple training, the shift doctor was able to operate the equipment skillfully, welcoming the first batch of local Han and Uyghur compatriots for OCT examination.

It is a very important opportunity for Big Vision Medical Technology’s AI OCT to be stationed at the First People’s Hospital of Aksu, which is due to the active and in-depth cooperation between Big Vision Medical Technology and the Eye and Refractive Surgery Hospital affiliated to Wenzhou Medical University. In July 2021, during the “Sichuan-Tibet Brightness Action” public welfare event organized by Wenzhou Medical University, the Big Vision AI OCT BV1000 was first included as one of the examination equipment, and more than 2,000 Tibetan compatriots received retinal examination. This 10-year public welfare project of Wenzhou Medical University also won the “China Charity Award” in 2021. Big Vision Medical Technology also provided equipment support for public welfare screening such as the Yaoxi community organized by Wenzhou Medical University. Through large-scale public welfare screening, the product performance and stability of Big Vision AI OCT have been fully tested.

Aksu is located at the southern foot of the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang. In the past, the ophthalmic medical resources were very weak, and patients often had to travel to Urumqi, in northern Xinjiang, for treatment. Since 2011, the Eye and Refractive Surgery Hospital affiliated to Wenzhou Medical University has been the paired assistance unit of the First People’s Hospital of Aksu, providing comprehensive assistance in ophthalmic clinical diagnosis and treatment, disciplinary construction, talent training, technical guidance and other aspects.

In April 2019, with the power of 5G technology, the Eye and Refractive Surgery Hospital affiliated to Wenzhou Medical University successfully created the first ophthalmic 5G telemedicine clinic in China. The First People’s Hospital of Aksu was connected to the Eye and Refractive Surgery Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University through remote ophthalmic telemedicine clinics, truly achieving interconnection, interoperability, and resource sharing of high-quality medical resources. After more than ten years of careful assistance from the Eye and Refractive Surgery Hospital affiliated to Wenzhou Medical University, the ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment and service capabilities of the First People’s Hospital of Aksu have been significantly improved, and it has become a pearl guarding the eye health of the people in southern Xinjiang in the desert.

The starting point of the independent research and development of fully automatic artificial intelligence OCT by Big Vision Medical Technology is to effectively alleviate the contradiction of inadequate and unbalanced allocation of ophthalmic medical resources in China through advanced ophthalmic artificial intelligence technology. After using the equipment, a doctor from the First People’s Hospital of Aksu said that the BV 1000 is “really intelligent”. The equipment automatically locates and focuses on the pupil, takes photos automatically, guides the patient through the entire process with voice, and after completion, the artificial intelligence automatically identifies and marks the lesion area. A patient can complete a double eye examination in just 2 minutes. The cloud platform used by the device can also seamlessly connect with the 5G remote telemedicine system, greatly reducing the dependence on operators and professional readers, and allowing more hospitals to provide OCT ophthalmic examination services. Since the installation of Big Vision BV 1000 at the First People’s Hospital of Aksu on New Year’s Day until January 25th, a total of 189 patients have completed OCT examinations, with the most completing 42 patients in one day, effectively meeting the clinical ophthalmic examination needs of local people.

In the recently released “National Eye Health Plan for the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025)”, it is clearly stated that “promote the deep integration of emerging technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence, and 5G with ophthalmic services, carry out the application of artificial intelligence in eye disease prevention, diagnosis, and follow-up, and enhance the early screening ability of eye diseases”. This is also the first time that artificial intelligence has been included in the national eye health plan. We look forward to unremitting efforts to empower grassroots ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment with artificial intelligence and emerging technologies such as 5G, providing comprehensive, fair, and accessible eye health services for the people.
